Our Grandpa we called him, Or Dave as others will know. He was one in a million, Always the star of our show. A Husband, Dad, Grandpa and Great Grandpa, He put his family and friends in first place. He would do anything for us, a heart of gold, And his personality lit up every space. 54 years of marriage to Grandma, “Have I told you that you look beautiful today?” He would say. They always came as a couple, Except for when he got married to Mae! Grandpa’s been there since we were babies, He’s taught us so much along the way. A part of him lives on in us, He’s helped us to become who we are today. Sleepovers were the best, He changed the landing light to red. Swiss Family Robinson and supper, Before he tucked us into bed. Weekends at the caravan in Anglesey, We always had such a laugh. To the beach we went with our ball and kite, Sneaking through Grandpa’s secret path. He enjoyed watching football, In fact, any sport to him was pleasing. Manchester United was his team, He’d shout “Arsenal” whilst sneezing! Football tournaments in the hallway, He'd be the striker and the goalie. Aching and out of breath - it didn't stop him play, Until he gave Matt his very first trophy. Walks, road trips, garden centres and parks, We'd have fun wherever we'd go. Playing games and laughing along the way, Singing ‘One Man Went to Mo’. So many holidays we’ve been on, Florida, Spain and Cornwall to name a few. Doing everything to make us happy, Our lives were much better because of you. Going out for a coffee, One of his favourite things to do. He’d arrive when the shop opened, He didn’t like to queue. “Hello I’m in your pocket, ring ring,” Was his mobile phone ring tone. It took him ages to find it, It’s whereabouts were unknown. Grandpa had an interest in technology, Always calling for a helping hand. He needed a little guidance, Our services were in high demand. “I’ve lost my homepage,” He would often ring to say. “Next time you come round, You can have some tea and a play.” Family meals at Regents Drive, Grandpa was the designated cook. Unusual combinations in his halogen, He never followed the book. Ho Ho’s and The Roebuck, Those were his favourite places to eat. So many meals we enjoyed together, Grandpa would disappear to pay the receipt. ‘Cheesy garlic’ or spring rolls was the starter, With a glass of ‘Rosie’ without a doubt. Pie or potato hash for the main, Being together was what it was all about. “Was everything okay with the food?” A waitress would stop on the go. He’d catch them off guard and say- “What would you do if I said no?” It didn’t matter if you knew him or not, Family, friends or members of staff. He’d make himself known - an entertainer, Never failing to make everyone laugh. Christmas time was his favourite, He even started planning in June. All year round when his home phone rang, ‘Jingle Bells’ was the tune. Finally when Christmas came around, To give hugs and presents it was his time. The smile on his face lasted all day and night, Dressed as an elf, whilst sipping his wine. Some days he felt poorly, But always told us he ‘wasn’t so bad’. Never wanting to worry us, Or make anyone sad. Appointments at Wythenshawe Hospital, He’d arrive extra early to hand out treats. Talking to the staff he called friends, Whilst waiting patiently on the seats. Grandpa, you were so wonderful, You acted as our guide. Life would not have been as fun, Without you by our side. We were just like your own children, You said that was your view. We didn’t just have one dad, We were so lucky, we had two! All the things you did for us, It’s impossible to work out the sum. We’ll tell our children all about our Grandpa, For years and years to come. Our poem could go on and on, We have so much to write. The memories we’ll cherish forever, They bring us so much delight. Grandpa, we love you so so much, And we’ll miss you everyday. Lots of love from your ‘children’, Kim, Matt and Mae xxx
